The Future Food Institute is proud to announce its participation in WATER4AGRI, an international initiative dedicated to transforming agricultural water and energy management in Monastir, Tunisia. Funded by the 3DEN Initiative, the project’s overarching goal is to build resilient farming communities by bridging local agronomic wisdom with clean energy and smart digital technology. Operating across two pilot sites in Békalta and Ouerdanine, WATER4AGRI addresses the pressing challenges of water scarcity, rising energy costs, and public health safety by introducing smart solar irrigation and safe treated wastewater reuse.
Achieving this vision relies on a close collaboration between international innovators, research institutions, and local governance. Coordinated by Engreen S.r.l. (ENGREEN), the consortium brings together digital technology partner ARTIO.Tech P.C. (ARTIO), the National Agronomic Institute of Tunisia (INAT), the National Food Safety Authority (INSSPA), and the Future Food Institute (FFI). On the ground in Monastir, the project works hand in hand with regional and national authorities, including CRDA Monastir and ONAS, alongside local municipalities, agricultural cooperatives, and smallholder farmers.
At its heart, WATER4AGRI aims to ensure that technological innovation genuinely serves the people who work the land, creating a sustainable, community-driven model for the future of agriculture. As lead for community engagement and capacity building, FFI guides the Monastir Living Lab to place local farmers at the center of every technological solution. Through a participatory co-design approach, FFI works to ensure that every tool is built with the community rather than simply for them – complementing traditional farming knowledge, fostering local ownership and trust, and empowering rural women and youth as key drivers of the green transition.
