Who is joining our virtual stages all over the world for the World Food Safety Day?

Food is the only element that unites us all, despite our different cultures, religions, habits, geographical origins. Eating is essential for human survival and through it people can take care of their health, consciously or unconsciously. Food is therefore a powerful medicine, and the effects of food choices should not be underestimated. However, having access to safe food is turning to be a privilege, not only for developing countries.

Urbanisation is shifting our diets towards more processed and convenience foods, increasing the risks of nutrients deficiencies. Obesity and overweight are phenomena that leave no region excluded. The heritage of intensive agriculture and livestock practices is evident in the massive usage of pesticides, fertilizers, hormones, and vaccines that end up in our dishes, just as mercury and plastic.

As 80% of marine pollution comes from land-based activities, also fish and other marine foods are not exempted. When talking about food safety, every actor of the supply chain has a role to play, from farms to consumers, including food transformation, transport, and distribution. Food traceability and transparency are therefore pivotal to reduce the risks of foodborne disease, to achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.

This is the starting point of a new series of Food is a Conversation events that Future Food Institute will launch on June 7 to celebrate the World Food Safety Day, promoted every year by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) to inspire concrete and tangible actions to help prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks.
