Part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climate-kic.org\/global-summer-school\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Climate-KIC Summer School: The Journey<\/a>, this mix of students hailing from about 20 different countries and 11 European universities were invited to share in a day of learning and collaboration with FFI &nbsp;as part of their five-week summer course concentrating on climate change, sustainability and entrepreneurship. The students, mostly working towards Masters degrees, come from various academic backgrounds &#8211; from Technology and Innovation Management, to Business Science, &nbsp;and Water Engineering &#8211; to explore the progress, frustrations and opportunities in today\u2019s global struggle with climate change.<\/span>\n<strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/foodinnovationprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Climate-KC-Summer-School-FIP.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1892\" src=\"http:\/\/foodinnovationprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Climate-KC-Summer-School-FIP.jpg\" alt=\"Climate-KC-Summer-School-FIP\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\"><\/a><\/strong><\/strong>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arriving at Reggio, they were greeted by Director of the Food Innovation Program and Professor Matteo Vignoli who presented an overview of the program&nbsp;and shared some of the goals of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iftf.org\/maps\/seeds-of-disruption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disruptive thinking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Prof. Vignoli then shared an engaging segment on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dt.unimore.it\/site\/home\/design-thinking.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design Thinking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, highlighting its advantages in education and entrepreneurial thinking. He reminded the group that innovation doesn\u2019t happen alone, and that communication is a huge human strength.<\/span>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was followed by visiting Stanford PhD candidate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooper.com\/journal\/2012\/7\/assessing-the-culture-of-stanford-universitys-designx-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gabriel Aldaz<\/a> who spoke of his own experience in targeting user needs and exploring technological innovation through <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/glass\/distribute\/glass-at-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Glasses<\/a>\u2019 integration in hospitals. A brief coffee break allowed for the visiting students and current Future Food Institute Masters students to mingle and discuss their own work, as well as future projects and plans. To round out the morning in Officucina, four FFI students Mercy Chatyoka, Hildreth England, Tarek Soliman and Elisa Bedin presented their own work on food security, behavioral food science and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agroecology.<\/span>\n<strong><strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/foodinnovationprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/officucina-climate-summer-program-fip.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1893\" src=\"http:\/\/foodinnovationprogram.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/officucina-climate-summer-program-fip.jpg\" alt=\"officucina-climate-summer-program-fip\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\"><\/a><\/strong><\/strong>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After lunch, a visit to the Barilla factory in Parma was coordinated through the FFI. Students met with Cesare Ronchi, the head of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barillagroup.com\/corporate\/en\/home\/media\/company-news\/barilla-signs-sustainable-farming-project-with-italian-tomato-consortium.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barilla\u2019s Sustainable Farming program<\/a>, and Marco Silvestri, in charge of Agronomy research, to learn about Barilla\u2019s push for more <a href=\"http:\/\/peoplefoodandnature.org\/blog\/barilla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sustainable methods in their production<\/a> and among their suppliers. An engaging Q&amp;A session allowed students to gain insight on energy demands, agronomy sciences and growing practices surrounding large scale pasta production. A tour of the factory concluded the day.<\/span>\n<strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Future Food Institute and the Food Innovation Program look forward to hosting more students and collaborating to bring to light new ways of thinking about food, food systems, and food innovation.
