The agricultural\u00a0production is based on\u00a0smallholdings and intensive farming:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcocoafoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/files_mf\/1383592757WCFBroulderJune2013.pdf\">according to the World Cocoa Foundation<\/a>, 80 to 90 percent of cocoa production comes from small, family\u00adrun farms, typically 2 to 4 hectares (5 to 10 acres). The production is\u00a0located in tropical areas\u00a0of Africa (73 percent of total production), Asia (13 percent of total production), and Americas (13 percent of total production).\u00a0Once cocoa\u00a0beans are harvested, fermented, and dried,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0959652615016108?via%3Dihub\">they are exported<\/a>\u00a0to major\u00a0chocolate producer countries located in the temperate band, like\u00a0Europe and Northern America.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/chocothon.com\/\">Chocothon<\/a>\u00a0is a sustainable innovation initiative that aims to\u00a0empower and connect cocoa farmers,\u00a0creating new opportunities for them and other value chain stakeholders in cocoa production. It has been conceived and presented by\u00a0the Google Food Lab,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/futurefoodinstitute.org\/it\/\">Future Food Institute<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.intracen.org\/\">Trade for Sustainable Development<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsl-lausanne.ch\/\">Business School Lausanne<\/a>.
