We have been progressively turning our Planet not only into arid and degraded lands, but also into&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-05\/Drought_in_Numbers_%28English%29.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">carbon sources,<\/a>&nbsp;Especially during the extreme drought events primarily seen on five continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"cb4b\">This degradation of the natural ecosystems directly reverberates on people, prosperity, and peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize:fit:1400\/1*no9vF0s1jn7ZV3T2Nlp2ng.jpeg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credits:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/images-of-change\/?id=794#794-nile-deltas-disappearing-farmland\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nasa, 2021<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ed8b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/2022-desertification-and-drought-day\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">55 million people are already hit by drought every year<\/a>, but projections foresee direct consequences for three-quarters of the world population in the next 25 years. Crop yield volatility, land degradation, water shortages, food and water insecurity, mass-scale migration, and conflicts are just some consequences directly related to drought. All are aspects that impair human survival and inevitably affect global economies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"b4cc\">Drought has generated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-05\/Drought_in_Numbers_%28English%29.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">650,000 deaths from 1970 to 2019<\/a>, while it has already generated around EUR 9 billion in economic losses in the EU and UK alone, with risks of reaching peaks of EUR 65 billion in case we don\u2019t take concrete and immediate climate actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ecec\">These numbers are self-explanatory. However,\u00a0<em>\u201cnumbers cannot measure the misery of thirst, the fear of a failed crop, or waiting for rain clouds to appear on the horizon but in vain. We need unified, concerted, and ambitious action; nations need nations to develop stronger national climate action plans.
